Description

Registration to the 2027 edition of SYMPLE gives you a full pass to an applied, problem-first school of hydrogeological modelling that runs from 8 January to 29 October 2027. Launched in 2021, SYMPLE is built around a simple but powerful idea: start from the problem and work backwards. Rather than building a model for its own sake, you learn to identify the data that most reduces uncertainty in the decisions that matter, then design a simulation strategy that actually quantifies and reduces that uncertainty.

The programme covers the full chain (from the field, through the data, to the model) because a model is only as valid as the field data behind it and the way information is extracted from that data.

Your registration includes:

  • Three live modules: Hydrogeology Basics and Modelling; Groundwater Model Calibration; and Parameter Estimation and Uncertainty Analysis using PEST/PEST++.
  • Hundreds of hours of recorded courses: a complete “hydrogeologist’s toolbox” spanning basic hydrogeology, contaminant hydrogeology, statistics and geostatistics, GIS, databases, groundwater engineering, MODFLOW-CFP, and FloPy/PyEMU. Self-assessment tests help you find and close your own knowledge gaps at your own pace.
  • Project-related Strategies sessions, where the whole modelling workflow is applied to real-world problems brought by participants, with discussion alongside leading experts.

Additional information:

  • All live lessons are held in English, then recorded and uploaded for never-ending access. Exercises use mainly public-domain software. Throughout the year you also get live support, Q&A sessions, customized learning paths, and satisfaction surveys.
  • The school is an Accredited Training Organization and carries 50 APC professional credits for Italian Geologists.
  • The initiative is held under the auspices of the International Association of Hydrogeologists – Italian Chapter.
  • Scholarships are available for nationals of and residents in low- or middle-income countries (preferably under 35) — see the registration form for details.
